Miles

Chapter 12

“Hey hon, we’re leaving now. See you when we get back. Good luck with Dr. Branford!” He really hoped she’d be open to discussing how down she’d been and so tired. Remi was four months old, well past the time for normal postpartum depression to have improved, and with him sleeping so much better, well, there was no reason for her to still be as tired as she claimed. Unless she needed medication. In which case, he hoped she’d start taking it.

“Thanks,” she called down from the bedroom. “I’ll be leaving soon too. Good luck with the shots.”

“He’s a big tough guy,” Miles said in his papa bear voice. “He’s not scared of no shots! Let’s go, mister! You got a date with some cute nurses.”

It was odd to think that Emily hadn’t made it to a single pediatric visit with their son. The first two months, obviously were rough with the surgery and recovery, but last month, she claimed fatigue and this month, she seemed to have forgotten his appointment altogether and scheduled her own at the same time. But then again, it had been a tough go for Em, so he guessed it made sense after all. Besides, this was the last visit he’d be taking Remi to for a while. After this, Miles was going back to work.

The nurses ooed and awed as usual before sending them into “the fish room”—a room painted completely blue floor to ceiling with colorful fish and sea-life covering the walls. Remi seemed to like it and babbled away having some deep philosophical discussion with a jellyfish.

Dr. Gayle breezed in with nary a pause after a soft knuckling on the door—something Miles had come to refer to as the doc’s knock.

“Mr. Remi Lawrence! How are you sir? And your father? Is he well today?” He grinned and pretended to shake Remi’s hand before plopping down onto the wheelie stool and zooming over to the exam table. He looked at his iPad for a moment, swiping up and down a few times and then sizing Remi up.

“Hey, Doc,” Miles interrupted. “Emily isn’t really keen on the nickname and so I’ve been trying to get back to calling him Rhett. Can you, uh, maybe make a note in his chart for next time. We should call him Rhett.”

Dr. Gayle chuckled and typed something in to the iPad. “All fixed. How is she doing by the way? I know the birth was traumatic for both of them.”

Miles shrugged. “To be honest, I’m not sure. She’s been the main caregiver for Rhett, but it’s like she’s on autopilot. You know how sometimes you’re driving your car and suddenly you look around and don’t know where you are cause you zoned out? That’s how Em is. She gets up, she takes care of him but then, she doesn’t seem to even register that she did it. She thanks me all the time for doing everything—but I’m not, you know?”

Doctor Gayle listened and nodded. It was the first time Miles said it out loud, the first time he really acknowledged it even to himself.
